Options for "permanent foster / hospice" animals

Follow

Some organisations have a program whereby animals remain permanently in the care of a person/family, but their medical care is catered for by the organisation. (e.g. hospice, permanent foster, bequest alumni)

The medical records of these animals need to be tracked the same way as in care animals, however, they are intended to be excluded from Length of Stay.

Although we don't have a standard approach for these situations, there are two ways you could approach this within existing functions. Depending on your individual circumstances, one of these options may work better than the other so choose the one that best suits your needs.

Option 1. Sub-status

Sub-statuses are self-maintained so you could easily create a sub-status named for the program in question and link it to an applicable adoption status. When these animals are fostered to homes to live out what they have left, you could adopt to the home, apply the sub-status in question and track them via reports such as 222 "Adopters Report", 196 "Adopted List Report" and 198 "Outgoing Detail List".

Option 2. Alternative / Specialised Placement

This was a field designed to mark and track outgoing animals that were a bit outside of routine procedures (e.g. TNR cats) so it is therefore suited to tracking animals like this as well.

The field appears on the Animal Details page towards the bottom of the Animal Details section, on the right just above the Evaluation Category Conditions. The options can be assigned at any time, so they can even mark the animal as part of this program while in care, and remain on the animal's file unless manually removed or changed. Because they aren't linked to any specific procedure, you can use them with any outgoing process you deem appropriate to the situation, whether that is adoption, release, transfer out etc. You can even use it in conjunction with sub-status if you want to make it extra clear what path these animals are on.

Animals marked in this manner are reportable via 198 "Outgoing Detail List" and 226 "In Care Inventory".
