Tracking Cats for the 1,000,000 Cat Challenge?

Follow

The 1,000,000 Cat Challenge requires sites to track animals that are held by finders for a couple of weeks before the determination of whether they want to keep it or bring it into care.

These animals should not be counted as in care, so this article is to offer options in tracking them. There are variations, so you can choose what best suits your internal protocols.

Option 1: Use Identification and Services to record these animals, by setting up Identification / Events that identify they are part of this challenge. These elements can be set up in Administration > Edit Drop Down Lists > Identification Types / Events, and individual verbiage can be included with contracts printed for each type or event. Click here for more information: Identification-Services

This would be reportable via 670 "Identification Type & Services Report - Summary" and 671 "Identification Type & Services Report - Detailed". However, they would not feed through to your public site if you list found animals there.

Option 2: Record these pets as "Found" but create sub-statuses for them so they can be tracked; e.g. to identify they are still within the two week holding period. Sub-statuses can be created via Administration > Edit Drop Down Lists > Sub-Statuses. Click here for more information: Sub-Status

You should be able to report on these animals using report 24 "Found List". These animals will easily upload to public sites if you need them to.

With either of these scenarios, you would need to consider how to identify that the two week holding period is over, and the finder has decided to keep or rehome the cat themselves.

We would recommend doing this through ID & Services, as this will link the animal to the new owner and you can mark it as a cat that participated in this challenge and found a home through it. You won't need to worry about those that end up coming into care, because they'll enter as existing files and that will close out the files as part of the process - if you wanted to mark them as participants of the challenge that entered care, you could do this either via the Animal Received field or the Media Animal field, whichever is more applicable to your processes.
