Why am I seeing the message "Unexpected error Username is already taken" after I click on Save when updating an existing user?

Earlier in 2015 we introduced increased security measures for creating logins for Shelter Buddy. One of these changes was that user login names must be unique and cannot be used for more than one login regardless of whether the login is active or not.

For security reasons this rule was made retroactive, but only engages pre-existing logins if any changes are made to the profile.

This means that profiles that previously worked just fine before this change was made may suddenly display this message if you attempt to make any changes to them now the change is in effect.

So how do I fix it?

If you search for this user using the filters “ALL” for active status and location, you will probably find there are at least two users who have the same user name, but one may be inactive.

If you make a minor change to the inactive file, e.g. place a digit at the end of the user name or adding "old" to the end, then re-save the inactive profile (making sure it stays inactive) you should then be able to work normally with the active profile.
